South Pars North Dome
Discovered 1971, offshore Iran and Qatar, the largest gas field in the world.
Overview
The shared supergiant holds on the order of 1,200 trillion cubic feet in place across the two countries. Qatar built an LNG empire on its North Dome share from the 1990s. Iran developed South Pars phases decades later under sanctions, layering gas condensate onto the market. The field now underpins a large share of world LNG.
