FAQ
What is the largest oil field ever discovered?
Ghawar in Saudi Arabia, discovered in 1948. It extends about 230 km by 30 km, has produced over 60 billion barrels, and sustained output above 5 million barrels per day at its 1980s peak.
What is the largest offshore oil field?
Safaniya off Saudi Arabia, discovered in 1951. It is the largest offshore field in the world by area and reserves, with production capacity over 1 million barrels per day of medium and heavy crude.
What qualifies as a giant or supergiant field?
A giant holds over 500 million recoverable barrels and a supergiant over 5 billion. Roughly 40 to 50 supergiants account for close to half of all oil ever produced.
What do proven reserves mean?
Reserves estimate volumes recoverable under current economics and technology with reasonable certainty, commonly about 90 percent confidence for proven. Estimates move with price and technology, which is why reserve numbers rise without new discoveries.
What is enhanced oil recovery?
Techniques that push more oil out after natural pressure fades: water flooding is most common, then gas and CO2 miscible injection, and thermal steam for heavy oil. Enhanced recovery can lift 30 to 60 percent of oil in place versus about 20 percent from primary production.
How is tar sands oil produced?
Near surface deposits are mined and washed with hot water, as at Athabasca. Deeper bitumen uses steam assisted gravity drainage, pairs of horizontal wells injecting steam to soften bitumen for pumping. Both routes are energy and water intensive.
