Cantarell Field
Discovered 1976, Campeche Sound, peak 2.2 million barrels per day in 2004.
Overview
Cantarell, an impact crater related carbonate reservoir, briefly made Mexico a top exporter. Nitrogen injection from 2000 masked pressure decline until output crashed after 2004. The fall reshaped Pemex and national politics. Production stabilized at a fraction of peak with redevelopment.
