Oloibiri Field
Discovered 1956, onshore Nigeria, the first commercial oil find in the country.
Overview
Shell-BP found oil at Oloibiri in the Niger Delta in 1956, and Nigerian exports began in 1958. The field was small and later abandoned, but it started an industry that made Nigeria the largest producer in Africa. Its legacy of pollution and poverty became a symbol of Delta grievances.
